Laura Spence

An enthusiastic and passionate local historian and author, my main business interests are Ulster-Scots consultancy; tourism (developing and delivering bespoke history walks and tours); and presentation of a range of talks, lectures and workshops (list available on request).

I also research and write commissioned articles and books; organise cultural events and programmes; and design and deliver classes on Ulster-Scots or local history themes for both adults and younger groups.

MEDIA CONSULTANCY
MEDIA CONSULTANCY
The two-part documentary, ‘Minding Our Language’ is an exploration by Tim McGarry of the way we speak in Ulster and how it has been influenced by the Scots language. I acted as Series Consultant, advising on contributors and content - and also spoke on camera.
A CHRONICLE OF COMBER
A CHRONICLE OF COMBER
This book, published by the Ulster Historical Foundation, was researched and co-written with D Rainey and launched in 2012 as part of the centenary commemorations for RMS Titanic. I have also co-authored ‘Remembering Rollo’ and am working on other titles.
A TOUR OF EAST ANTRIM
A TOUR OF EAST ANTRIM
This group shot is taken at historic Templecorran graveyard, Ballycarry - one of the stops on a bus tour for Stranmillis College ‘Lifelong Learners’ in 2016. The day trip included Carrickfergus, Whitehead, Ballygally, Cushendun and the beautiful Glens of Antrim - encompassing history, poetry, literature, myth and legend.
PANELLIST AT LAUNCH EVENT
PANELLIST AT LAUNCH EVENT
This photo was taken at the launch of a ‘Languages of Ulster’ booklet. As one of four panellists, my focus was on Ulster-Scots vocabulary and idioms; and through reference to poetry, I argued that Ulster-Scots is not the preserve of one tradition in Ulster, but a shared heritage.
DISCOVER ULSTER-SCOTS
DISCOVER ULSTER-SCOTS
I organised a season of events in Spring 2016 to promote the new Discover Ulster-Scots Visitor Centre in Belfast. The programme included bread-baking and cookery; lectures on witchcraft and the Great War; a folk music ‘kailey’ and a poetry panel - all well-attended by the general public.
AN INTRODUCTION TO ULSTER-SCOTS
AN INTRODUCTION TO ULSTER-SCOTS
I have developed a six-week course (Level 1) introducing Ulster-Scots history, culture, language and literature; along with a follow up course at Level 2. I deliver this to community organisations or as a more bespoke resource for local libraries, councils and adult learning groups.
